Libraries in the age of superabundance
Michael Lascarides, @mlascarides
Within a generation, digital technologies have turned information from something relatively scarce into something so abundant that some of the wealthiest companies in the world have gotten there by purporting to help us sift through it. This shift from scarcity to abundance has redefined the role that libraries play in their communities, large and small. This talk will explore some of the vital and unexpected ways that libraries and librarians in NZ and beyond are creating new tools for serious researchers and amateur explorers alike.
Michael is the manager of the National Library Online, and writes/teaches/hacks about digital access to cultural materials.
On aggregation and reuse
Andy Neale, @andyhkn
For many people it is true that “if it’s not on Google, it doesn’t exist”. And yet there is amazing NZ stuff in the deep web… not the dank or illegal stuff… but the information, photographs, stories, and memories of New Zealanders whose internet goodness is missed or buried by the search giants. In this talk we are going to explore how this digital ephemera is being connected and reused in magical ways.
Andy is the Head of DigitalNZ, based at the National Library. He works with teams to create magical experiences with NZ digital content and data.

As always, NNW is free and open to everyone*. Bring your friends and family – someone to share a meal with, definitely, as there are some great 2 for 1 specials on the menu.
* Who behaves themselves, of course. Naughtiness will be stamped on. Hard.
